(60,010 posts)Our Golden knew within 5 minutes that I was coming home.
I had/have no set schedule, but when I did leave to run errands, Mr. Dixie would report that the dog had been lying around, normally, at the other side of the house, but "5 minutes ago" he had gone to the front door and kept staring at the driveway. Every time.
Thing is, I would have been more than a mile away given that time frame.

(698 posts)He would usually be napping when it was time for me to get home, but he would perk up and become attentive just before I arrived. With a little more careful timing we calculated that he reacted when I was about three blocks away from the house.
Most of the time he would then go back to sleep, but once in a while he would get up and trot over to the door to greet me. My wife finally figured out what the variable was. The times when he came over to greet me were when I had stopped on the way home to buy cat food. He could not only tell from three blocks away that I was on the way home, but whether I had cat food in the car.

(60,010 posts)Anyone who has lived with cats for a long time will understand.
is downright scary in her ability to tell time. Every night without fail she would come announce within three minutes of the scheduled time that it was dinner time. At first I figured she was timing it off her previous meal, but then one day I fed her an hour late. Figured shed be an hour off for the next meal. Nope, there she was at the usual time, announcing meal time. Spooky!!!
