A 'Renaissance Man' with one of the most brilliant and creative minds on the planet. Even for someone like me, who is not much of a fan of the horror genre, I run out of fingers trying to count the number of books and the movies based on those books, that still mesmerize me, every time I read or watch them.

(2,500 posts)Got a lot of his work in hardcover, even as his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Happy birthday Mr. King.

(34,104 posts)Such great story development but the characters, hardly anyone really fills out characters like he does. He hooked me in the late 70's with The Shining and I have never looked back. Only books I could not read were Pet Cemetery and Cujo.
Happy Birthday to the person who has probably entertained me more than anyone with his books.

(26,257 posts)I remember I was on the couch, at night, reading a particularly frightening passage, when my Dad walked in the door and startled me to the point that, I swear, I levitated right off of the couch!
His psychological thrillers, like 'Dolores Claiborne' and 'Misery' are my favorites. Well, actually I should say are AMONG my favorites. 'Apt Pupil', 'The Green Mile' the seed he plated with 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' are incredible stories/movies.

(22,048 posts)Since my first boss handed me, "Salem's Lot", to take home and read. He didn't count on me staying up all night to read it, and calling in sick the next day.
I'm his biggest fan.......

(115,661 posts)It scared the bejeebers out of me and I've been a fan ever since. King is a first-rate story-teller. (And have you ever noticed that he rarely uses adverbs? Avoiding adverbs makes his style really clean and clear.)

(20,165 posts)It's half autobiography and half his thoughts on being a writer and how to be a better one.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,661 posts)Because that's something I noticed in his work. He just doesn't use them but instead finds a specific word or phrase that doesn't clutter up the sentence.

(20,165 posts)He says there is usually a verb that works better. For example, why say "walked slowly" when you can say "strolled"?

I've seen so many of his interviews, and he always comes across as such a down to earth person. One would never guess, from watching him, what kind of tales take root in his mind.
I follow his Corgi's Facebook posts. Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious.

(7,595 posts)Fun fact: Stephen King wasn't happy with "Carrie" and threw it away. His wife rescued the debut novel from the trash.
Stephen King's cameo in Maximum Overdrive.
