The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell, Julian Fellows has gone soft. And me, right along with him. Spoilers!
He's a genius, and as always, all happy endings. Well, except for the one that had me mopping my face and blowing my nose. It was, however, the perfect curtain call. ~snif~!

(23,812 posts)I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it was.
I do wish there had been a place for Mr. Mason - he was one of my favorite supporting characters in the series.
2 minor critiques:
- Cora's wig was FUGLY!
- In the final scenes, Mary's eyebrows were so overdone as to look like a little girl had gotten ahold of her mother's eye brow pencil and gone crazy with it. Distracting and not at all attractive.

(20,433 posts)not just from the Dowager. Her wig was more like a nest than hair....
I liked Mary's hair. It used to look like doll hair. Branson was gorgeous, and that smile! I would have liked to see more of Mary's new husband, but he really had no part in the story.
I felt badly for the downstairs women. They managed much of the strategy but never even saw the royals.
Lots of time spent on the daughter/maid storyline, and except for Branson, it didn't matter much. Only gave the Dowager a little chance to show her heart.
The gowns were even more gorgeous than usual. Even the men sparkled.
Mosely really made sure the royals knew it was Downton's people who were putting on the show. He was awesome.
Edith made a lovely showing: Lots of cleavage! Wowser! That castle she lives in: I would have loved time to see more of that.
But all happy endings, even for Maggie.

(23,812 posts)...end of the movie. He can't have been on screen for more than 2 minutes, if that. Why that actor's name (Matthew Goode)appeared in the bigger letters seems unjustified. His scenes could have been cut with no effect on the story.
I was pleased to see as much of Lord Merton as there was. I love the romance between him and Isobel. His proposal scene in the series was a total delight. Douglas Reith, his portrayer, is a silver fox. He had a much bigger role than Goode.
It is hard to see Imelda Staunton and not think of the nasty professor from Harry Potter.

(101,702 posts)I'd be absolutely crushed to find that he was different from that in real life. He just emoted "warmth".

(3,445 posts)I saw it twice this weekend and cried both times...end of an era.
Glorfindel
(9,706 posts)she should have been there, smiling and gracious. She needn't have played a big part in the story. Otherwise, I have no criticism to offer. I was definitely not disappointed.

(82,849 posts)Enough loose ends that IF Fellows wants to continue on, there are storylines to exploit. The problem will be getting all the actors back together. I particularly enjoyed the by-play between Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, and them calling each other by their Christian names when they were off duty.

(32,328 posts)I hope so! I want to keep this going.
I plan to see the new Downton movie, but I have a busy schedule coming up the next 3 weeks. I'm so psyched for this movie that I watched the entire series from start to finish over the summer! Now I don't know when I can get to the theater, dammit! Maybe I'll have to settle for pay-per-view.
