(115,691 posts)to make their voice sound lower than it's capable of. You hear it all the time, especially in the voices of young female celebrities and singers. It's an annoying affectation.

(6,261 posts)So that it seems anachronistic to hear young women talk that way in a show that's supposed to be set in the past, like Mindhunter did recently.

(7,947 posts)It's sort of droning and dragging out the syllables. Kind of nasal helps. Here's my favorite example, Daisy Haggard playing Myra on the show Episodes-- she's the one in the middle with the long hair.
Start at 1:10 to get the whole effect.
