At my elder daughter's wedding in the wine country near Rüdesheim on the Rhein last month (the civil ceremony was held in NYC the month before), among the many images that stuck in my memory (before we get all the images organized) are these three:
My younger daughter, who doesn't believe in marriage (but has a daughter, see below), but had the time of her life organizing her sister's marriage, here in a rare "the two of us" moment:

My wife's mom (just turned 92 yesterday) and her great-granddaughter, all of 15 months old:

And our granddaughter going off on her own during a tour of a centuries-old winery, past barrels of wine in a place she couldn't possibly understand, but nevertheless found interesting enough to go off and explore by herself:

(54,990 posts)have a good friend who does the Xmas market in Rüdesheim, though she is from upstream. even I know the area a bit after a couple of trips. the wine museum is interesting if a bit dusty - and when we went there they were hosting a wedding. I have some pictures somewhere.
also isn't there a famous brandy place there? my memory is gone at the moment.
The Kloster itself is where "The Name Of The Rose" was filmed.
As for brandy--you're out of my area of expertise. I don't drink alcohol at all, so most information about it goes right above my head without even looking down.

(54,990 posts)and watched the movie after asking my son about it - as of course I had never heard of it LOL)
my friend knows a man nearby who has carriage horses, (she hired him for several years to transport visitors for a local festival). we went for a long ride all over the area and then stopped at the Kloster for a break. went back by car to buy some wine (a little pricey but the place is famous) and got tickets for some strange historical light and (recorded) music show one evening.
had to google Rudeshiem brandy to remember - Asbach. https://www.ruedesheim.de/en/wine-culinary-art/asbach/

(54,051 posts)I remember a lot of the details.
One disadvantage of not drinking--when people talk about the subject, I have no clue what the discussion is about!

(54,990 posts)I was visiting an old family friend this past weekend and he is a serious alcoholic, but man his memory is sharp as a tack! me...I raised 3 kids and blame all brain failure on that!

And, not to forget the one generation who holds it all together--our girls' mom, whose momentary lapse in judgment (marrying me) should not cloud all the other great things she has accomplished:
