Looks like the dog is cat friendly but a stranger cat isn't dog friendly.
So cat is protecting his dog from another cat.

lived with me would protect her best buddy, my neighbor's dog, from other dogs! She'd bite anyone who came in the yard when I wasn't home and "patrolled" the fence line every morning and every night. She was more like a dog dressed up in kitty clothes.
