Every year around Christmas, I give a gift to one of my medical professionals (and occasionally a gift to her nurse also). The gifts are small and are always accepted graciously.
She is an animal lover, so the gift almost always has to do with animals.
Instead of giving her some little trinket that has to do with animals this year, I was thinking of making a donation to an animal organization in her name. But then I thought that might be presumptuous of me to assume that she would necessarily want her name published in a list of donors to a particular charity, so that idea is out.
What I came up with next is to just give her a nice holiday card, write some kind words of thanks in it, and explain in the card that I made a small donation to a specific animal organization in *my* name, but tell her that donation is in honor of the help she provides to me each year. Is that stupid? This person really helps me out...in fact, she kind of keeps me from being dead.
Any other suggestions?
The gift probably cannot be anything substantial, because you can probably get into some dicey ethics issues when gifting your medical professional...

(27,215 posts)they will send you cards to give to people that trees are being planted in their honor.
It's win/win. They plant the trees, and you don't have to give them any info on your recipients.
I do this a lot.
(And, our national forests are critical habitat for many animals).

(3,275 posts)The chocolates are really good and all profits are donated to animal rescue groups. I gave some chocolate as a gift to my brother last year and it was a hit.
