or run...

We also shouldn't assume that he's an employee of the store...maybe he works security where such a cart makes sense...

This photo is making feel me a lot of things, but "secure" isn't one of them...

Because he's overweight? Sometimes people have health conditions that cause this sort of morbid obesity.

I don't find this funny at all. Maybe it's the only job the poor man could get. You should applaud the fact that he IS working, not mocking him for his weight condition.

I alerted on this post, btw - but four jurors found it just hunky dory to mock others. "Standard lounge fare" my ass.

Please remove this post for the sake of decency and treating others with the respect they deserve.

mocking so much as asking the very valid question, why would a person hired to do a security job need a cart?

Short story...

Mr Pipi was on the police force of a local city for some years until chasing a perpetrator across the (flat) roof of a department store, siding off the end and injuring both his knees ended his career.

He wanted to stay on the force, even if it meant taking a desk job. He was forced to retire. Why? Because wearing the uniform meant that he must be able to pursue or otherwise subdue anyone during the course of his duties.

And that's the way it should be. People hired to do a job should be ABLE to do their jobs.

I don't want my car mechanic to be missing both arms or most of his fingers. How can he do work on my car?

I wouldn't want a blind dentist.

And, by the same token, a "security" guard who probably can't take six steps without gasping for breath really is an epic fail.

I was one of the jurors earlier today. I agree that the point is not that he is obese, the point is that he would make a lousy security guard.

I accused of you of being - at the very least thoughtless - when it comes to the plight of the morbidly obese.

You shouldn't make fun of people who are less fortunate or have problems beyond their control.

Not a purity test, just good manners, civility, and a little bit of compassion.

You find the fact that a morbidly obese man is "amusing". You - and others - seem to find it "funny".

I don't. It's not something I'd expect to see on a supposedly liberal/democratic - and therefore compassionate - site.

Making fun of others who are less fortunate due to circumstances beyond their control just isn't acceptable behaviour.

:sigh: - I miss the mods.

it's not.

I don't see anyone laughing at his plight here.

I see a lot of concern that someone who is supposed to be fit enough to do a specific job obviously isn't.

I find that frightening, at the very least.

If he really is a security person, and if he really is that disabled, then yes...this photo/situation truly IS an epic fail.

the thread, then.

Plenty of people laughing.

And even if it's a true photo, still not funny. Maybe it's the only job he can get. How many "old retired guys" do security jobs? How many disabled? There just needs to be someone there to act as a deterrent and call the cops. Happens every day.

It is NOT an "epic fail" - I see a guy who needs a job, is willing to do a job, and someone willing to give him a job. Isn't that better than sitting around doing NOTHING? I applaud, not mock, not laugh. Not think of this as a FAILURE but as a success story.

And - if it IS "merely" photoshopped, then it truly is just a mockery, now isn't it?

and obviously this officer could not do that if he need this mobile chair to get around. Perhaps he has a job somewhere, that only requires him to check identifications or give information, thus allowing him to be in a "sitting" position.
Perhaps he does not work at this store, but is a customer.

Some obese officers work in a position like dispatch, that does not require them to personally respond to emergencies.

"respond quickly". That's an assumption not proven by working in a GROCERY store.

People ARE laughing. And they're laughing because he's overweight. Period. Would they laugh if this were a wounded veteran using prosthesis? I think not.

15. There's a really simple, straight-forward explanation

He's not working.

At the office where I work, HR goes to great length to hire the disabled. We've got several people with MS and Lou Gehrig's disease requiring them to have walkers.

There are several people on security detail at any one time, but there always has to be somebody at the main desk watching the huge bank of monitors for the cameras. They arrive to work and leave in uniform. At least one of the security folk uses the local disabled transport to get to work and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he uses one of those scooters when he's at the store - they're provided for free. There's a big basket on the front where you put your groceries. You can't see it from this view.

My best friend is disabled. He's got really bad knees. Because he can't walk well, he can't exercise properly and he's been putting on the weight, which aggravates his knee problems. He's due for surgery soon and when he gets it, he intends (if I have to drag him there) to exercise it all off and get back to normal.

This guy is likely in the same boat. He may have been injured on the job, put on desk duty, gets around by DATS and uses the free disabled scooter at the store.

18. Another explanation

He may simply be driving the cart back to the front where it belongs so customers may have access to it, or he may driving it to where it goes for servicing or a recharge. I see the bag clerks at my stores driving these things back and forth all the time, just trying to get them where they are normally parked.

Otherwise, any fun being made of the guy's weight or possible disability is digusting, especially for DU. I refrained from being on this jury because I knew I could not objective. The picture is not a fail, but original post sure is.
