Random Trivia: What 1976 thriller opens on Yom Kippur?

I just realized it's Yom Kippur. Happy Yom Kippur to all who celebrate. It reminded me of a 1976 thriller that opens on Yom Kippur. One of the first events in the film is a strange road-rage collision of two cars with a fuel truck, intercut with our hero running around an reservoir.

This film culminates in a scene at this same reservoir.

Anybody have any idea, or should I give more clues?

EDIT: Thanks for participating. This was the third R rated movie my parents allowed me to see. I thought it was an amazing film. By that time I was a fan of both Dustin Hoffman (because of All The President's Men) and Roy Scheider (Jaws) so I couldn't wait to see this movie. My parents were huge Dustin Hoffman fans. It was violent, and my mother said, "I might need to cover your eyes at some point" but she never did. (She later covered my eyes at one point during "Carrie" )

The rest of this particular film has very little to do with cars but there is one chase...

Hint: The best chase in the film is our hero running on a highway overpass being pursued by a vehicle through New York at night. He leaps off an overpass and makes his way back to his apartment. He's in severe pain as a result of some unwanted dental procedures.
