I really like Ma and Pa Kettle.

I had forgotten what a pleasant and lovable character Ma Kettle was (Marjorie Main). And Pa Kettle is just a lazy, harmless curmudgeon (Percy Kilbride).

It all began with the 1947 film version of Betty MacDonald's best selling novel "The Egg and I". The public clamored for more of the Kettles and their 15 children so they made 9 more Ma and Pa Kettle fims.

The Egg and I: Excellent.
Ma and Pa series: Silly but fun.

I moved to the area where Betty MacDonald had lived and found "egg and I" road. I mentioned this to a co-worker who immediately got very huffy. "they were NOT AT ALL LIKE THAT!!!! If ANYONE was it was Betty, how DARE SHE..."

I backed off, asked around, and found out the co-worker's aunt and uncle were Betty's neighbors and who she based Ma/Pa Kettle on, though indeed Betty was the one who was totally clueless. There had been a lawsuit from varied neighbors who felt slandered by her depiction of them. I don't think it went anywhere as, unless you were local, you had no clue who was what.

They are still touchy about it. The series is rather funny indeed.
