(14,492 posts)As a kid in the country, it was an annual ritual to collect black walnuts to hull, bag in towsacks and sell. Many of us boys had black-stained hands for weeks. Mom used some to make cakes.
Life was so simple back then (50s/60s). It was a huge treat when dad would stop at a crossroads store and buy me a 6-oz. Coca-Cola and a nickel bag of Planter's peanuts.

(53,784 posts)stopped selling them. I guess not enough people tried them.
They're quite delicious when you can just eat them like that and not have to go through the shelling.

(25,941 posts)I like all nuts, although there is something sublime about hot roasted cashews. I always get some when I find them, which doesn't happen very often.

(5,661 posts)Cashews. Any way but raw.
I even eat pieces.
Pistachios are right behind.
My favorite fall snack is Spanish peanuts and candy corn in a bowl. Make sure you get candy corn and peanuts in the same handful. Divine!

Ah, found it...

But I seem to recall it was more than that.
Maybe sulfur dioxide and other preservatives were involved.
You could buy a cellophane tube of them in the late sixties that was probably packed in the 'fifties, judging by the label, and they wouldn't be inedible.
They were just the sort of food you might want to find if you were Don Johnson in A Boy and his Dog.
