I do reward them with bacon.

(21,645 posts)why I put Ember, the food hog cat, into another room when I'm prepping or cooking food. As I noted in another thread, she just will not stay off the counter when I have food out. I love cats, but can't stand them getting into food.

(35,755 posts)but no way would I let them get that close to the cooking area. Think about those little paws--may have just come out of the litterbox. Totally not sanitary.
Those cats were adorable, though. I see a cat and I just want to hug on it.

(21,645 posts)counter when I was asleep or away from home. So before I put any food on the counter, e.g. dough to roll for pie or to knead for bread, I wipe the counter down thoroughly. I would do that even if I did not have a cat, but it's especially necessary since I do have one.

(21,645 posts)where the paws have been that bothers me. Not to mention attempts to nibble at the food or lick it. Mine just won't stay off so I put her in another room with her toys until I finish. But I found some advice online that I want to try - putting double sided tape on the part of the counter where she tries to go. It means losing some counter space.for myself but might be worth it.
Cats are good kitchen supervisors.
