(26,263 posts)The cinnamon rolls and plain, unglazed buttermilk cake doughnuts were the best I've ever tasted.
A local grocery chain, here in Genesee County, has the best Long John cream filled doughnuts. The cream is not too sweet, definitely not weak and runny, like at a couple other stores. And the chocolate icing topping is thick and full of cocoa.
Great. Now I'm wishing I had headed out for a doughnut, instead of settling for a bagel, this morning.

(25,183 posts)in the Chicago area, we had a pastry called a "Long John", it was essentially puffy glazed-doughnut batter fried up in the shape of a rectangle, with white icing on top. When our family moved to the Portland, Oregon area, we couldn't find them, but the next best thing was a maple bar, the same thing with maple-flavored icing on top.
Since I moved to the East Coast in 2007, I haven't seen either of them. At least up in NY, the bagels were top notch, I still haven't found a good bagel in the Myrtle Beach area.

(26,263 posts)The best are the ones from the locally owned, non-chain bakeries. They may cost a little more, but it's sure worth it. The local grocery store that has such good ones is a chain, but it's a Michigan owned chain and they do take GREAT pride in their baked goods.

That does look like a S'more's themed doughnut in the middle, very creative, but even thinking about eating it makes my pancreas ache.

(3,268 posts)If I buy donuts from my regular grocer they look fine in the store but after 12 hours or less in my house all the toppings melt whether plain sugar or chocolate. Is there some way to keep them closer to looking like when I buy them?
