I don't eat turkey but I like the rest of the dishes. I love stuffing, sweet potatoes, cornbread and pumpkin pie.

(115,702 posts)you get in the grocery stores that's all black and crunchy. Wild wild rice is awesome. We always had it for Thanksgiving dinner, and we usually had pheasant or grouse from my dad's hunting trips instead of turkey. The dish I hate the most is that godawful concoction of sweet potatoes and marshmallows. A few years ago my SIL, who always serves that glop, accidentally set fire to it when browning the marshmallows, and I rejoiced.

(12,904 posts)When I first saw my midwestern mother in law make dressing, I couldnt believe my eyes. There was not a speck of cornbread in it! I still cant believe it, really, 33 years later.
Im kinda not sure whats in there, cause its so not right, I still wont try it. Thanksgiving always makes me wish I still lived in the South.
ps...my favorite food of Thanksgiving is green bean casserole. MY green bean casserole.

(12,132 posts)in the house my wife was born in and where, for several decades, my mother-in-law made the most fabulous thanksgiving dinners.
We are in Florida which counts as the south I reckon but MIL was originally from Indiana. She always made both cornbread dressing and oyster dressing and her cornbread dressing is still what I dream of when I'm eating anything dressing related. Man I miss her and I often wonder how my wife inherited none of her cooking abilities and we lost all her recipes.
I never even tried the oyster dressing because gross.

I also make a pretty good broccoli/Gorgonzola casserole and for dessert sometimes I made a peppermint cheesecake that people seem to like.
The staples I detest are: the hideous green bean casserole and pumpkin pie.

(9,265 posts)Or filling as we call it here. I dont stuff the bird though. Actually the turkey is my least favorite part, but its kind of obligatory (unless youre a vegetarian) and needed for gravy. On second thought, leftover turkey on white toast with mayo is divine.

(15,100 posts)The very last purchase on the day before Thanksgiving, we always stopped at the local bakery for a loaf of their Dutch crunch (white) bread. And we made the most delicious sandwiches the day after. That was my Mom's favorite. Thanks for the memory.

(36,434 posts)Our family nixed that stuffing stuff back in the early sixties when the smart ones discovered the turkey cooked much, much better without stuffing.
Oh, and mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy is a BIG old school production working up the giblets (sans the liver).
And of course the pumpkin pie, but I reintroduced a desert into our fare when I discovered my grandmother's recipe for carrot pudding and found her two old Lipton tea tins to boil them in. Boy howdy, I make a wicked whisky sauce to serve with it!

(4,608 posts)if made by my mother. Its my top of the list, number one favorite meal. Roasted turkey, real stuffing cooked inside the bird, her kickass giblet gravy, cranberry sauce (yep, the canned kind), green or orange jello with mandarin oranges in it, crescent rolls, random veg (corn, carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, whatever- its all good).
We start with squash bisque and end with pie. Im not much on pumpkin, but her apple is fabulous. With ice cream, of course.
I am soooo freakin happy to be home for Thanksgiving this year! For many reasons, not just Moms excellent cooking. Its been a while. Too long.

I also love stuffing.
I hate turkey and always have another dish for myself and the other people who also dislike turkey. I usually have salmon as a second main dish.

(15,100 posts)is that pumpkin pie is, in fact, a breakfast food.
It contains eggs, milk, and a vegetable. You can even count the crust as a stand-in for toast. Voila! Breakfast!
I also put a little bourbon in my pumpkin pie. Pour out one shot of the evaporated milk and replace it with a shot of bourbon in the custard before you cook it. This keeps the liquid volume the same. Also, a lot more cinnamon than the recipe on the can calls for.

(25,337 posts)I use Splenda instead of sugar. And I bake it in the microwave. It's consistency isn't quite what you would get if it was baked in an oven etc, but I make it for myself, so I don't care. It lasts several days.

(63,221 posts)But now she always tries to doctor them up w/ sour cream, cream cheese and other things and they are very heavy. I am a purist. I just loved the plain old fluffy potatoes w/ a little butter, milk, salt and pepper. They were perfection! I think I am going to have to start making them myself.
I also like the vegetable dishes. I like the turkey too. I only like the stuffing if it is started on the top of the stove and baked separately in a casserole dish and is crispy and dry (w/ gravy on it). I hate it if it is all mushy and gross after being cooked in the bird.
Dessert doesn't really interest me at all. I'm usually too full anyway.

I really like everything else, but could do without the mashed potatoes. No green bean casserole, ugh. Fresh asparagus!!
My son made a pie with a Japanese pumpkin last year... it was fabulous.

The right kind of stuffing, smothered in gravy, is the essence of Thanksgiving to me.

(11,611 posts)I like his turkey gravy, garlic mashed potatoes with bacon bits, brussel sprouts fried with bacon bits, homemade cranberry garnish, cheese cakes, and pies. So in other words, all of it.
His turkey is to die for. Tender and juicy. Even the white meat isn't dry.

2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed
1 small onion
3/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar
Grind the raw berries and onion together. ("I use an old-fashioned meat grinder," says Stamberg. "I'm sure there's a setting on the food processor that will give you a chunky grind -- not a puree."
Add everything else and mix.
Put in a plastic container and freeze.
Early Thanksgiving morning, move it from freezer to refrigerator compartment to thaw. ("It should still have some little icy slivers left."
The relish will be thick, creamy, and shocking pink. ("OK, Pepto Bismol pink. It has a tangy taste that cuts through and perks up the turkey and gravy. It's also good on next-day turkey sandwiches, and with roast beef."
Makes 1-1/2 pints.
It's much better than it sounds, easy to make, and a pleasant change from canned cranberry sauce.

(3,268 posts)after the feast and the company is gone, when the last cup, plate, pot and pan is washed...the lovely leftovers have been parceled out to fridge or freezer, you can sit and contemplate the arrival of the Christmas season...this is best done with an ice cold glass of eggnog with a touch of spirits and a slice of mince pie. It's happening this month and I eagerly await it.

(2,150 posts)Using leftover in-bird stuffing as one or both slabs of bread to hold it all. Gravy, gloppy green beans, mash a yam in there, scoop of canned cranberry sauce, it all counts as condiments. Ham or roast beef too if those were in the table to stretch the turkey.
I just had lunch and I'm hungry again. 'It's the season!

(21,466 posts)inside the bird. But I never learned to make it myself and she's gone now. I piled stuffing on a slice of breast meat and poured gravy over all of it.
My own home made cranberry sauce from fresh cranberries and oranges. Sweet potatoes baked in their skins, with a pat of butter on them. Not glazed or mixed with marshmallows which is guilding the lily IMO.
Veggies -- Asparagus with white sauce. Succotash.
Pumpkin pie. I always add more cinnamon.
My own cranapple pie.
I made a pumpkin pecan pie once from a BH & G recipe. Very good but very rich. Could only eat a small slice.
