SocSec is attached to the individual. Disability must be proven, has little to do with how you got there in the long run. Whether it's sudden or cumulative, they evaluate your ability to work and support yourself with regard to physical ability backed by medical evaluation. And it takes a long time, you have to show you were unemployed for a full year and then probably fight it out in court. It's possible that you may not need to go to court but it's common and can drag on for years. It depends on your situation. I was told it would take a long time but, because I was cast into extreme hardship - homelessness - my case was expedited and awarded in less than two years with no litigation. But I was initially denied and had to work for another five years before I finally had to stop. and lost my housing due to no income.

If you decide to apply, find an advocate, like at a clinic, and have them help you through the process before you consider getting an attorney.

Do you file taxes as an independent contractor and pay self employment tax? In any case, you have to be disabled and not working for at least 6 months. It's really not for short term disability. I hope you get better soon.
