2. You don't have to get one, but if you ever want to sell it -- like in bookstore or Amazon --

you'll need one on the cover. It's not that difficult to get although it might be a bit expensive for a book intended for family and friends. Haven't had to get one recently, but looks like price is currently $125 to register one.

Curt's link above has everything.

6. Not for sale. I'm giving it to friends and family. My college library would probably be interested.

3. We self-published a little book about 6 years ago through Amazon.

As a self directed project in HS, our daughter wrote/illustrated a children's book. IIRC, we did everything through amazon and we "sold" about 10 copies (mostly family members/teachers) with proceeds going to a charity that she picked. I don't remember if we had an ISBN but it did sell. It was a fun, easy project. We did one draft, changed some colors and we were off.

Not sure what your project is but maybe this will help.

Here's a link for the service. Disclosure, I have no affiliation or financial interest in Amazon.

If you go exclusive with Amazon, they'll give you one.

Alternatively, probably Smashwords or Draft to Digital will also give you one. Unless you plan to publish multiple books, it's not worth buying your own.

But, yes, you need one.

7. Thank you. Then I would want one, because I want to offer the book to my college library.

BookBaby, the self publishing company, offers that option. So now I know to take it!

I learn new stuff every day!
