The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI woke up this morning, my house was 71 inside
Thermostat set a 64.
It's January 12th, in Connecticut.
I have the windows open; it's STILL 71° inside. I turned the heat entirely off for now.
This is insane. Birds are chirping outside, and the cat is glued to the screen in the window. And shedding.
Yesterday I was out doing errands in a tee-shirt and jeans, and had my sunroof cracked open.
This is insane!
The only thing spoiling this is the cold that I have.
I think I'll take advantage of this and change the oil in my car.

(4,858 posts)...turned the thermostat off. A nice January thaw, and enjoying it while it lasts. Remember how cold December was?

(49,445 posts)We had a couple of really cold days, but mostly I'm still wearing my fall jacket.

(102,300 posts)3 miles walk at 5:45AM. Only 18 degrees now at 9AM.
As long as it is dry and the wind isn't blowing, I'm fine with that. The only thing I regret is having to continually sit out on the ice to check the air pressure in my tires since when it is this cold it takes only a little change in barometric pressure to set off my tire pressure sensors.
Enjoy the warmth though. I keep my own thermostat set on 55. Layers of clothing make it comfortable. LOL

(102,300 posts)is fully comfortable. Of course, I sleep under my share of fleecy blankets and down comforters, but even with the heat set that low, the actual daytime temps are in the 60s inside (lots of southern facing windows).

(14,961 posts)I guess it's what you get used to. There are times, I wear a flannel shirt and sweat pants around the house, when ours was is set at 70.

(102,300 posts)When I'm home, if it feels too cool (after dark, typically, on the coldest days), I might turn it up, but usually just use a space heater when sitting still for an extended period. I like to do a lot of outdoor activities in the wintertime, so for me acclimating to cold is important, I think.
Paradoxically, I guess, I don't like overly air-conditioned buildings during the summertime--though it is certainly hard to get by without it--even outside the South.
The only constant is with climate change, we'll all be looking at what is necessary to remain comfortable a lot differently.

(16,383 posts)When I turn mine down to 70 at night everyone complains. I still do it though because it forces my basement-dwelling boys to go to bed to keep warm, LOL.

(102,300 posts)feel it is cold. Seriously. Even set at 55F it only generally kicks on overnight. South-facing stacks of windows and good insulation, I guess. I think it only drops much below 65 occasionally.

(65,409 posts)high thirties by this afternoon. But the weather has been so mild all winter (high 40s,high 50s, high 60s, even 70 occasionally!) thus far that I haven't had to wear a coat once this winter. This is eastern Kansas, where winter used to be the cold season, and January was the coldest month.

(23,123 posts)So far we've had zero winter - the coldest time was 39 so far. Usually by now we've had at least several freezes, but not this year.

(31,519 posts)Yesterday we had freezing temps with sleet and freezing rain. That lends credence to the old saying "If you don't like the weather, stick around for another 5 minutes".
