I just opened a hospital bill

I’m not sure what it was for exactly because the bill didn’t actually say, but I’ve done a lot of routine medical things in my local hospital system—check up, shingles shot, mammogram, etc,.

Anyway, I racked up $768 in random charges and then there were assorted insurance payments and a credit for something. The bottom line was that I owed them $0.01. Yes, they sent me a bill for one cent.

Based on various business metrics, probably cost them $28 to mail it to you.

This is where a lot of the fraud, waste and abuse in our medical system occurs.

For-profit healthcare should be the target.

Our message should be focused on removing the abuse and profits and unnecessary, non-medical treatment spending in the system. Yes, I realize that may be disruptive to a lot of people initially, but moving away from the current insanity is the only sane choice...falling for the "death panel gang's" constant nonsense is not a path forward, its a treadmill designed to exhaust resistance only.

Where I worked before, we had a part of the set up that we wouldn't send any patient bill under $5.00, but sometimes weird things happened which caused a statement to generate in error when adjustments hit within a few minutes before the billing runs started. It was very aggravating, as the manager of the dept., having to handle irate calls about penny bills, so I finally got IT to install another edit on the back end to kick out these small balance bills that snuck through.

i had a friend who always paid his utility bills adding 1 cent.
Back then they were required to keep that 1 cent on the books.
Drove them crazy.
Now they don't have to.

OK, I’m only kidding, because whoever answers the phone probably has more important things to do than deal with people jerking therm around, but it’s still funny inside my own head!

without any personal identifying info? I might know someone on Twitter who would be willing to retweet this insanity.
