flipped on again. Plus my fingers overlap on the letters of the phone keyboard. So I edit often. Or just give up and let words stand as they are, so long as they are somewhat comprehensible.

I used to teach U.S. History in high schools. Every so often I would misspell a word on the black board, and some student would correct my spelling. (And I was the teacher) Almost as embarrassing as having your zipper down. I had that too. Oh my, what the hell am I saying??? Well I stopped teaching 20 years ago...that is long past..(some students that I taught early on are now in their early 60s..)

I didn't do stellar in history [had some sort of a block 😊], but excelled in Latin.

Sorry 'bout that! [History.]

I was a voracious reader when I was young, and that made me a good speller. When you've built your vocabulary from words that you've seen correctly spelled on a page, you can picture the correct spelling.

The flip side is that, while I seldom make a spelling error, I very often mispronounce words - much to the amusement of my friends and family who've largely built their vocabularies by listening to speech.

When I was in first grade we studied phonics. The next year I went to a different school district that didn't teach phonics and I was by far the best speller in the class. I was the only one who could spell Phoenix and I got three red foil stars for that.

Then there's that whole "I before E except after C, or as in sounding as A as in neighbor or weigh." I think there's more to that, too, but I don't know it.

Oh here you go: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/i-before-e-except-after-c-9-helpful-spelling-rules/

Good luck!

Are fingers too fat or schooling too lean or keyboard too slippery?

The number one suggestion I give to all is "read what you write before submitting".
Use spell check and learn the words that you get wrong.
However, there are certain words that I need to Google over and over for the spelling.

Slow down.
No excuse for posting wrongky. (sic)
Spell check is wrong if it tells you this sentence is right. "Eye eight diner at the dinner at ate pm"

For vocabulary building and word learning, as suggested above, read widely.
