(21,657 posts)up just a couple hours drive from there, live closer than that now. Best view is from the Canadian side. Have not been there for several years now, but in the past I also went to the Madame Toussaud wax museum in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Dinner at a tower restaurant with glass windows. Great view, but the food, not so much.
When driving into the parking lot of the viewing spots, the mist in the air from the Falls made it necessary to turn the wipers on. Not a problem though when out of the car. Depends on where you stand and the amount and direction of the wind. Very loud roar from the water, as you can imagine.
Very touristy, of course. People from around the world there.

(21,657 posts)up from the water is the mist that I mentioned. The boat is called the Maid of the Mist. It takes tourists under the Falls, behind the wall of water. I have never had the nerve to try it. When you are actually there, you can see the falling water better than in the videos, which seem to catch the mist so well that the water is obscured. As you drive toward it, you can hear the roar of the water before you can see it.
I have only been there in summer, but I noticed that the video has winter shots, too, when the mist and backsplash water freeze on the land near the Falls.
There are multi colored floodlights on the Falls at night, which reflect off of and refract through the water. They use holiday colors during holidays.
It is the size that makes this an awesome sight. If you think about it, it is only a river flowing over a cliff. You can see the same thing on a much smaller scale in many streams and creeks that flow over tiny little breaks in the creekbeds.

(3,439 posts)..dangerous, no thanks! I'll watch from railed off area! Went water rafting when I was younger--damn scary! Older now--a bit cautious now.

(21,657 posts)Niagara River, upstream from the Falls, but not advisable to do white water rafting there.
The Maid of the Mist has been operating since I was a child (many decades ago) and before that. Many people have taken the tour. But that does not assure me enough to try it.

(3,439 posts)..like Nicholas Wallenda, guy who walked tightrope across Niagra Falls [okay I admit it, I did watch.] Now he's about [or aleady did] to tightrope over active volcano..now that IS crazy loco!

(21,657 posts)Stunts do not appeal to me.
I don't know of anyone crazy enough to raft the Niagara River rapids. There have been occasional accidental falls into the river above the Falls, with predictable outcomes.
A very few people have deliberately gone over the Falls in a barrell or enclosed trunk. Some survived; some did not. Some were intentional suicides.

(3,439 posts)..bc they were fact based..then comes on republican pundits who were playing to audience of one--so shut it off; not watching news online either! Going to give it a break. It's a bit to chilly to work out in my yard, perhaps later on today... so found a quiet place and re-watched your post of Niagra Falls; just stunning vistas from every angle; relaxing music beautiful scenery que mas queres? [What else can one want?] Have a great day! Paz.

But I am not the one who posted the video. I was only responding to the person who did post it bc I live nearby and have been there many times.
