Cotton double layered and has a pocket for a filter. Got about 20 finished and a few to add ties to. These are for family, then local hospitals if needed.
I haven't used a sewing machine in so long that it took two hours of exploded bobbins, a broken needle, and some cursing before I figured it out.

(23,572 posts)as a pediatric hospice nurse we finally are being told to wear masks. For weeks they have been encouraging volunteers to make masks from a special pattern. They are gonna give us volunteer made masks on Monday. Our policy will be to wear the homemade mask with a surgical mask inside as a filter. They are having us try to use the surgical mask for one week with one back up surgical mask. Will see how that goes. But, many families don't want us in their homes so we are doing a lot of video visits.
It's really wonderful what you are doing for your family and the hospitals!
You. Are. An. Angel.
Hospice nurses are some of the best humans I've met.

(5,446 posts)I had not had my sewing machine out in years, so I went through the same thing in getting reacquainted with it. I've done 50 so far and have gotten my time down to less than 10 minutes each. I'm also doing the rectangular ones. Whoever is putting the kits together for us (we pick them up in a bin behind our church) is giving us balls of string made from thin strips of t-shirts.

(2,302 posts)My ex-husband asked for some for his "new" family (we all get along). New wife doesn't cook OR sew.
He asked how much and i told him I wanted one roll of TP for each!

(21,910 posts)LOL same here. I dragged my Singer out last week and had to read the instructions again how to thread the machine and fill the bobbin.... an hour later...... I started. Took me like 7 hours to make the first mask. LOL Also had no elastic.... ended up cutting tubes out of pantyhose -- it works!

I sewed the first one by hand and boy were my hands sore!

(21,910 posts)but that was too complicated for me. I'm not much of a sewer. It's sort of fun though (if it wasn't for an actual pandemic, of course....)
