can anyone help with recommendations?
I got an application via my credit union but when I searched the company in the BBB database, I was less than impressed.

(7,506 posts)Here's a tip don't do business with any company not licensed in NY. They have the best consumer protection laws. Anything licensed in Texas is shaky. They have the fewest protection laws. My handle may or may not be a tip as to why I have some knowledge.

(11,155 posts)NY state will require the insurer to either find a company to take over when things go bad or find a company to take over. The insurer I worked for was on both sides of the equation, took over 3 or 4 problem companies and then 20 years later was taken over.

(7,506 posts)They kind of looked down their nose and said an insurance company, who are you? They were told we invest x dollars a day. We have thought long and hard if we buy you outright we can't buy anything else all week. We bought them.

(25,183 posts)Why is it that you think you need life insurance? I try not to engage in bets where I have to die to win.

(79,302 posts)and thankfully my baby brother stepped in and paid for everything.
I only have my grandchildren to fall back on and don't want to put them thru that.

(25,183 posts)If that's what it's for, then perhaps the best thing is to pre-pay and prearrange for that. No sense making life insurance companies rich in the process.
Now would not be a good time to investigate costs, etc, but after we get through this crisis, that would probably be a better time, after funeral providers have had a chance to sort through the current situation.

(25,183 posts)That way, you get to specify what you want, and your grandkids don't have the opportunity to fight over not giving you the best, or spending too much. Everybody can rest assured that you picked what you wanted, and simply grieve without excess strife.
Back in my early 20's, I saw a very close-knit family go completely to pieces over such a thing. There's an old saying out there, "You never truly know a person until you've divided an estate with them." I've made it clear to my Mom (86 years old) that I don't want a thing, everything should go to my sister's adult children who are developmentally disabled.

(36,827 posts)When my MIL died we wanted to bury her next to her family but the cemetery didn't have anything close. It turns out a lot of people pre-buy plots and then don't use them. We found an individual seller who sold us a plot next to her family for about 1/3rd the price of what the cemetery was asking.
