In college, I took a half-year course about Mendelssohn. Fascinating guy and a terrific melodist.

Two fun facts I recall about this Symphony. First, although it's referred to as his Third Symphony, it was actually the fifth (and final) symphony he would compose. It was the third of his symphonies to be published and the publisher called it the Third and it stuck. Second, it took Felix 12 years to complete and he apparently set it aside for quite some time before returning to finish it.

(Boy, I pulled those out of some dark corner of my memory!)
