She's been the best dog ever. Lhasa Apso, 15 yrs old this month. But she can't get around too well, and there's this big tumor that has likely already metastasized from what I've read. We're looking at The Big Decision. I'd suffer for her if I could. She's been just THE BEST.
Sad today.

(149,663 posts)I'm so so sorry...
They're our children in so many ways, aren't they? I hear your pain, sweetie...
You know what you have to do, because she can't help herself, but oh boy, in some ways that just makes it hurt more...
But they rely on us to take care of them, and especially at the end of life.
She knows you love her...

(5,909 posts)Where is the tumor? Our dog Brady died 2 years ago from incurable cancer. It started on his leg, vet thought it was a knee problem, took him to a specialist who diagnosed it. We kept him comfortable until it was time. He was the best.
So sorry.

(21,977 posts)It has grown exponentially. Insanely fast. She'd never survive the surgery or the recovery.

(24,931 posts)So sorry to hear about Muffin. She survived it well for another year and a half.

(21,020 posts)Amy had one too, even though she was spayed.
It grew frighteningly fast and got massive.
Toward the end the skin started to split and bleed.
She was just past 13 when we brought her to the vet for the final time.
Deciding whether and when to do that is hell.
God, it always makes me cry when shit like this happens to people and their pets. Not fair!

(21,977 posts)Meanwhile, the thing has seemed to double in size. Amazing how fast it grows. I've read that it will split and bleed. Got to be awful.

(21,020 posts)Because it seemed the bigger it got, the faster it grew. At the end, it was about the size of a football or maybe a bit bigger. It was so big she couldn't even lie down comfortably.
We wanted to have a vet come to the house to help her over the Rainbow Bridge but nobody would. It would have been easier on her. So we packed her up in the back of the car and went to the vet. She never complained.
Like you, we went back and forth for a long time about when to do it. It's so hard to let go.
But yes...it will split and bleed. When that happens, there is no way around it.
Again, I'm so very sorry for you and your doggy. I hope you find strength in the coming days.

(13,661 posts)Sad news. But she loved you, and no doubt knows how much she was loved. I couldn't bear to part with my Tommycat and I waited too long to make The Big Decision. As soon as you think Muffin is uncomfortable, help her on her way.

(21,977 posts)I'll be with her at the end, just to hold her and bid her safe passage.

(47,675 posts)The vet offered to operate but I said it sounded more like an autopsy. She agreed.
Hang in there.

(30,947 posts)But you know she will not suffer any longer. I had to put my beloved Rottweiler down in 2010 because she had liver and bone cancer, but I finally had to make The Big Decision when she could no longer walk. She was just 2 months short of her 13th birthday.

(6,421 posts)I know exactly how you feel...
My son just lost his dog on Memorial Day...
Don't know when the grief will end...
The sadness...knowing the time is near.
Not wanting to let go ... knowing you must.
Holding her as she passes ... the most wondrous act of love..
She knows your love for her... and you know Muffin's love...unconditional.
Fifteen years of love is a lot to lose...
My heart goes out to you...
We survive.. and life goes on.... with a piece of our hearts gone with them.
I know you'll make the best of the time that Muffin is still with you...
I'm so very sorry..
peace and love to you~

(21,977 posts)I really feel bad for our daughter. Muffin is HER dog, and has been for 15 years. She housetrained Muffin, would take her outside in the rain with an umbrella to go potty ... this is really hard on her.
But I'm not going to let Muff suffer. And it looks like it's to that point.
