Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell, among all the panic, a new life begins, and we are grandparents--again!
This afternoon, my German-based daughter gave birth to her second daughter, Lotta Ricarda (Ricarda is the name of her father's mom).
A pre-natal acrobat, she was doing in-utero somersaults, driving the ob-gyn nuts. One day, she was position, the next day, she wasn't, and this was going on for weeks. He had had enough by today, got her in the right position and gave the labor a little induced nudge. Nearly nine pounds, she was in perfect health, slept peacefully almost from the beginning, and so my courageous daughter took her home the same evening (probably more evil germs in the hospital than at home, she said). Her two year old first daughter was intrigued at first, and then threw a tantrum when she realized she no longer had exclusive rights for everyone's attention.
As fate would have it, today is also the birthday of one of my grandfathers--back in 1894. Plus ça change.......
My wife drove down there (Taunus area) Monday, but I couldn't be there, as I had work all over the place, and couldn't hang around. This morning, I left for Paris at dawn, got some stuff done there, got a 5:25 PM train to Rotterdam, changed there for Utrecht, where I am now. The guys from our Dutch office will pick me up in the morning so I can work there at warp speed and try to get back to Germany at a civilized hour tomorrow evening. I was supposed to go to Spain Friday. Guess who ain't going to Spain Friday?
There is no rest for the weary.

This new granddaughter of yours will no doubt be very active as soon as she recovers--and it won't take long!
Best wishes to all! And a special hug for the big sister!

(54,445 posts)So far, all appears well. I think it's a little gutsy for my daughter to give birth and then just leave for home the same day. However, remember, she's the one who, while in law school, instead of clerking for some judge in her summer pause, chose instead to work with the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone in West Africa (one of only two chosen out of 200 applicants!).
