I pay $204 for cable (3 TV's), internet, and I still have a land line.....I call them tactfully to try to reduce bill and they don't want to hear it.....And the town home complex I live at Comcast is exclusive provider....So can't just switch to Verizon, etc...
I remember the time when a cable bill didn't cost as much as a luxury car...

(2,580 posts)I threatened to leave, asked for "loyalty discount', after 2 different reps,
got basic cable package plus high speed net for $135 mo. /2 yr contract.
Still way too much and sadly my rationale was access to my sports teams games which now is irrelevant.

(11,070 posts)So they're charging the cable companies more to carry the stations, and the cable companies pass those fees on to the customers. I work for an ISP/Cable Company and we've basically given up on trying to fight the cable costs - Internet is our focus and cable is not a priority.
When I started, you could get cable/Internet/Phone for $75. Now Internet is around $75 itself and Cable is over $100 for basic.
We got a smart TV with our stimulus, and with a $30 antenna get around 100 channels.
Then we pay about $50 total for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max and Prime. Don't miss cable at all.

(38,328 posts)I was irritated with them because it was $20 when we first subscribed.
We've also quit broadcast television.
My wife and I have inexpensive DSL internet service and pay $8.99 a month for "standard" definition Netflix.
So far we haven't run out of things to watch, but maybe we were never big on watching television anyways.
We're much more likely to spend our money on newspapers, magazines, and books -- most of them electronic these days.

(12,480 posts)Cost range for me.
My complex is Verizon only and alot of people here are section 8 and HUD.
Verizon's greed insures we won't have cheaper alternatives.
Make the web and tv public services. After all taxpayer money made them. Cut out the middlemen. They made enough profits. Make it a Nationwide service for all.

(3,427 posts)After the special discount expired, I would call them back and they always had some deal they could offer me for another year or so. But I guess that wouldn't work if you have no choice of providers. Maybe you could tell them you'll cancel one of your services unless they can give you a better price (if that's an option for you).
In my case, I cancelled my cable TV service, since I rarely watch TV anymore, but switched my landline to Comcast because it was cheaper to have the landline plus Internet than Internet alone. Then that deal expired and I got rid of the landline, but they said if I bundled Internet with a basic cable plan, it would be cheaper, so I did that for a year (never connected the cable box). This year, that discount ended, so now I just get Internet service from them. It still costs too much.
I also use the Xfinity mobile service, which is a pretty good deal if you can keep your data usage low.

(14,118 posts)internet service. While Comcast is the best provider we've had so far I anxiously look forward to a time
when there's some serious new providers here that will result in reduced cost and improved
service.

(63,221 posts)It's insane! I hate them. I only have internet and very basic TV service, most of which does not even have sound and they still charge me over $100 per month.
Unfortunately, I had to switch to them when I moved into this neighborhood a year ago since they were the only provider. I so want to get rid of them and just get internet service. I never watch TV, but I sometimes like having it on in the background. It's not worth it.
