I'll be looking for her in my small home, can't find her, and then as I'm walking out of a room she meows and she's right behind me.

I think they apparate. I don't know where they go but so far the cats that live at my house always come back - eventually.

Mind you, I believe they could make themselves invisible but that would be boring.

herself to be right behind me.

That's as good an explanation as invisibility. Thank you.

Apparition is the ability to magically move from one location to another. It is an advanced magical skill for witches and wizards but apparently comes easily to house elves.

But apparating requires a lot of concentration. I think they just slip through wormholes into other dimensions.

However, it's not just cats that slip through wormholes.

At least two different times I have had things materialize in my dryer that weren't mine. One was a green bath towel, the other was a pair of men's slacks.

I have a friend who has had sweaters and shoes materialize in his closet. And in his own size. The above mentioned slacks were eventually taken by my son and the fit him perfectly.

my friend has no non-human companions living with him. Never has.

You are, not doubt, familiar with the phenomenon of socks apparently disappearing in the dryer, and wire hangers multiplying in the closet? My Son The Physics Major once told me that's because socks are the larval form of hangers.

that while cleaning closets recently I collected an entire laundry basket full of hangers and an IKEA bag full of socks, some of them at least 30 years old. They've been breeding in that closet for years, apparently. I still think cats are responsible for the mystery of your friend's clothes. Since they can travel through wormholes they wouldn't have to have been his cats.

Then zips from one side of the head of the mattress where it meets the wall to the opposite side without touching the floor. She has to do it quickly, probably to defeat gravity. This is usually accomplished at about three o'clock in the morning after I have finally managed to fall asleep. As soon as I wake up, sitting bolt upright, she flees.
