Watched the first episode tonight. It's SO GOOD.
In short: it's set in a world where some of HP Lovecraft's constructs are real, but it directly engages with his racism head-on and calls him out by name. The main characters are Black people in Jim Crow America (it's set in the 50s), at least two of whom are big SFF/horror fans. It's REALLY GOOD drama and horror so far - and the worst monsters the characters face so far are racist white people. The Shoggoths are almost a relief.

(9,988 posts)taut tense action-adventure-fantasy-horror but also with good characters and complex relationships. And history. Jim Crow and sundown towns.

I also wanted to check out that new Perry Mason series, but I need tp pay the rent first.
I read all the books (by Erle Stanley Gardner), at least a half-dozen times, and I wanted to see if it's better than the B&W TV series with Raymond Burr. That series was nothing like the books. In the books, Perry and Della were in love.
Hmmm, HBO does have a free trial offer going.
Anyway, sorry for boring you, but thank you for this thread.

(5,128 posts)It's like a mash up of Watchmen and True Blood rolled into 1.
And, I've read the book and I won't spoil anything but I'll say the Tulsa massacre will come up in this too.
