I'm a sucker for a sappy movie... I am

Sue me.

Don't get me wrong, I like stuff w/ suspense. I like stuff that makes you think. But I truly believe that sometimes the sappy stuff is just plain wonderful.

Some of my favorites (in no particular order):

Steel Magnolias ("Momma, give me all your internal organs." )
Amazing Grace and Chuck ("But wouldn't it be nice?" )
Seabiscuit ("Just because we're littler, it doesn't mean we're scared." )
On Golden Pond ("It's me, you ole poop!" )
Field of Dreams ("No Ray, it was you." )

Line up w/ your favorites, please.

My favorite scene may be the one where Oliver is walking out the hospital and runs into his dad in the revolving door. His father offers to help Jenny, but Oliver informs him that Jenny has died. When his father apologizes, he hits the old man with the "Love means never having to say you're sorry" callback from earlier in the film. Sappy, but gets me every time. And, the movie has hockey in it, so bonus

Outside of the box nominee: Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan (1982). For one scene, as opposed to the entire movie. Kirk is eulogizing Spock, and the shot is a closeup of Kirk, and he says that of all the souls he's known, Spock was the most human. And, Shatner clutches as he says human. Damn, always puts a lump in my throat.

"Waking Ned Devine"

Two of my favorite films. They aren't totally sappy, but they qualify. The underdogs win in the end. And they are really both very good, well-done movies.

Also, they are both comedies, so if you want to be uplifted, they are great choices.
