As I put this down Duncan pup and boog the chocolate lab are digging a hole. A new best hole and Duncan stops and barks into the hole and boog and Duncan golden retriever pup start digging deeper.
And then I look and our indoor cats they are sitting on wall watching the boog and Duncan dig. And the cats are probably talking you know the planet Mars will be closet to earth in the next 15 years the month of October.
Is feline astronomy as I think cats come across as deep thinkers or K-9 hole digging the best new hole and barking into the new hole the science that we need

Plays catch. And, shell let you know which one she prefers at the time.

(17,019 posts)I had a cat I taught to play fetch. She was very good at it. But she was a special kitty. I also had a guard cat. She would growl at the door if a strange car pulled up in the driveway.
I've had two cats that loved to play fetch, at least as kittens.
They lose interest as they get around 18 months to 2 years though, but for about a year to 18 months, you throw a toy, they will absolutely go get it, and bring it back to you to throw again.
My 2+ year old will still bring a toy (usually a small ball) to the bed in the morning on occasion for me to throw and then she will bring it back for me to throw again, although not always in arms reach.

(24,054 posts)...us to play fetch. They each have different preferences for how they like to do it, and will show up with toys in their mouths and drop them nearby to let us know its time to play.

(5,645 posts)She was awesome and would fetch anytime I had a beer. When I was gone during the day she would get pull tabs from the trash can and "stash" them in my bed under the blanket (hence her name).
Loved that cat. She would bring the pull tab to my feet and drop it then look at me. When I grabbed it, she would not take her eyes off the tab. I could throw it anywhere and she would get it every time.
I had another cat, Pixel, who did not fetch, but would come when called and jump in my lap. Pixel could also scare the heck out of me by just suddenly appearing out of nowhere, even if I was in a room with the door closed. The Cat Who Walked Through Walls was the inspiration for Pixel's name...
Cats are my spirit animal.

(15,805 posts)catch cat treats (Temptations are the best!) tossed on the fly. He's very clingy, just like a dog, he follows me everywhere, gives sandpaper kisses and is cuddled up beside me now.
My dog is a Great Pyrenees, they are bred NOT to chase anything because their primary job is to serve as a livestock guardian and protect their charges from predators. Forget balls and chew toys. Even if I toss her a dog cookie she just casually strolls over to it, never runs to grab her treat.

Your assessment of Dogs vs Cats seems spot on, cats as the thinkers vs the dogs being lovers of life that just do whatever makes them happy.

(246 posts)Fetch? Never! Does not compute. My Great Pyrenees wouldn't fetch if her life depended on it. She's a working dog and way too serious for silly games with people - silly games that serve no purpose. She knows how to prioritize her time and attention. Games aside, she is the definition of unconditional love. Love that is unearned and maybe undeserved but still flows like a river. She is my own personal buddha embodied and the epitome of humble gentle strength and power. I love my girl so much.

(6,261 posts)At least when comparing the number of neurons in the brain. Going from memory, I think dogs typically have about twice as many.
It's apparently because dogs use a great deal of brainpower being socialised with humans, reading our emotions, understanding our behaviour, etc, whereas cats just don't give a crap.
