The Magistrate
(95,256 posts)The dog has an explosive charge on its back, to be triggered when the rod projecting up is disturbed. The dogs were trained to go under a tank by being fed beneath one while its motor was running.
Bayard
(22,172 posts)Never heard that before.
Really sad that thousands of these dogs have been put down after being retired.
The Magistrate
(95,256 posts)It did not last long, and did not work out to well in practice.
I would expect that photograph was taken in training, rather than action. Once the trick was rumbled, any dog near a tank drew fire.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)apparently they didn't work out too well certainly for the dog in any case but they had a tendency when the explosions started to dive under the nearest tank and that wasn't always the one from the intended side.
I don't think the project was very long lived.

"During the first battle scene in Gladiator, Maximus had a beloved pet wolf (Wolf of Rome) fighting at his side. According to the script, the wolf was later to be killed in a tent, but Ridley Scott decided that would be too depressing for audiences so the wolf's fate is left unmentioned."

(70,261 posts)ok, didnt click the link. but rly. mastiffs were the original war dogs.
i'm a boxer lover. had 3 purebred ones, and 2 victorian bulldogges that were half german boxer. more stalwart protection you cannot get.
we had a boxer when i was a kid. early 60's. folks fell in love w them during the war, and brought them back. but the lines that came here had cancer. that's what took my beloved biff at only 7.
for years, i never saw another one. back then you just didnt talk about it. it was "the c word"
about 20 yrs ago, you started seeing them everywhere, at least here in chicago.
but man. the temperament of those dogs.
they arent supposed to be "natural clowns" or "high energy".
they are supposed to be calm family protectors.
but ppl were breeding them for color more than temperament, and that's what happens when you choose beauty over brains.
which is why i went w the victorians. i actually didnt know at the time that the dogs i bought were half boxer. usually, they are half dog d'bordeaux.
but this particular breeder started out w the most beautiful english bullies you ever saw. guy named carlos woods, kennel called 'woody bulls', and working german lines.
my first one looks pure boxer, but a proper boxer. southern yankee bulldogge's dr victor von doom. aka doctor. 120 lbs now, just like biff 1. not like these 70 lb things you see these days. and fawn w a black mask. he was 200 lbs of drive in a 100 lb bag.
biff, my current boy, is 90 lbs of couch potato, and classic red and white. i always said he was a short legged boxer. and sure enough he is. a certified therapy dog who is as sad about being locked out of our hospice work as i am.
my second boxer, puddy, was white. 90 lbs. back then, most breeders still offed them at birth. there were 9 pups in the litter, the first 6 were white. the breeder was in tears.
no papers, but from a great kennel, and a boxer through and through.
she was my nanny for 12 years, and my best friend.
it was spendy to get a hearing test for dogs back then and it was a running argument whether or not she was deaf. but i swear she could hear me. and she sure always knew when the mailman was at the door.
in between was barbie, after the senator. picked her up at the pound. she was the skinniest thing ever. she had raised a litter of 8 at the pound. they were waiting for boxer rescue to pick her up, but they never showed.
i walked around the corner, and she greeted me w a gruff bark. i didnt even notice that her back end looked like she had been in a concentration camp.
i thought i would be able to fatten her back up, but never could. she was probably a bait dog. had scars.
but she was as good a dog as i ever had, and was the perfect aunt for biff and doctor doom.
okay, i'll hit the link now.
