Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIn honor of Halloween, my wife and I chose to watch Hitchcock's "The Birds"
I'm 64, born in 1956, and the movie came out in 1963. I don't think my parents took me to the movies to see it (oh, the nightmares that would have ensued). But I must have caught it on TV when I was quite young - and it truly terrified me.
Over the years I've watched it a few times - but it's been decades, so it was interesting to watch it with "fresh eyes" and the knowledge of movie technology these days.
A few things - I was amazed that this was Tippi Hedron's first movie, and that she is still alive. Jessica Tandy (my favorite of hers being Driving Miss Daisy) looked so YOUNG! The girl - Veronica Cartwright - does look like her Lost in Space sister, Angela, a bit. Hitchcock made his appearance very early in the movie, the pet shop scene.
My wife and I never really paid attention to the dialog in the movie before, but there certainly was a lot of blabbing - on the phone, setting up the bird scenes. We laughed at the fake driving of the sports car scenes. The birds looked much more superimposed, but for its time, it was pretty well done.
The scene when the birds attacked the restaurant made us giggle a bit as well - why did cars keep driving into the burning pumps - and where the hell did the horse drawn carriage with the produce crates come from - and why???
Finally, why did Tippi go into that upstairs bedroom at the very end?
It was of course not as scary as it felt when I was young, but was fun to watch - the use of music, the unique way of shooting that is pure Hitchcock, made it worthwhile.
Much more enjoyable evening than watching endless politics on TV!
Anyone else want to share their impressions of this movie? Or any other scary movie you ended up watching tonight?
