Anybody got some good circular arguments?

Last edited Thu Jun 28, 2012, 03:04 PM - Edit history (1)

Normally I'd post this in GD but it's a nightmare up there right now.

I'm going to be doing a debate on Same-sex Marriage in September in front of a huge crowd and I need all the ammo I can get. I'm opening with logical fallacies. I need some that aren't religious based. Here's a typical circular argument.

FR: The Bible is literally true.
ME: How do you know it's true.
FR: It says it's true in (some bible verse).
ME: How do you that verse is true?
FR: Because the bible is literally true.

You: Says who?
FR: Says (Bible verse). I'm exercising my freedom of religion, which is protected by the Constitution.
You: Gay people have freedom of religion too, right?
FR: Yes.
You: Then why can't they eschew your religion and get married?
FR: Because making same-sex marriage legal is unconstitutional.

Still looking.
This:
Is the mandate a violation of the First Amendment?
I believe it is, as for the first time the federal government would be punishing people for not purchasing a product from a private for profit industry, just for being alive.

The amount of the fine is irrelevant as that can always be made more punitive in the future, the critical point being that precedent would be set.

The for profit "health" insurance industry will then use those profits extorted from the people to bribe and lobby future Congresses to act against the peoples' best interests.

Furthermore they will use those profits in an unlimited fashion thanks to Citizens United to promote propaganda enabling for profit "health" insurance industry friends to political power again at the expense of the peoples' best interests.

The people are in effect forced to subsidize an industry diametrically opposed against them, literally politically speaking against themselves.

No offense intended - they just are.

Example:
- The world is too complex for there not to be a god. Therefore, god exists.
(It's circular because it assumes god exists, and that's why the world is complex, and therefore god exists)

- a: homosexuality is a sin because god says so in the bible.
B: god didn't write the bible. God has never 'written' anything.
A: I know. But the bible says that homosexuality is a sin, and the bible is the word of god.
B: how do you know that? God has never written...
