I am decluttering the living areas for the holidays. I got a good start in my dining room today. I had 3 things to take to the basement, so I left them on the table. While I was working, I thought of a craft I could do with some of the Christmas cards I saved over the last 40 years, so dragged 2 big boxes of old Christmas cards out of the room I'm using for storage until I get organized. I also wanted to check the numerous strings of lights I found in the basement to see if any worked. So after getting the mail, looking for a life insurance policy, checking my bank balance, chatting with my daughter for a few minutes, making bean soup and a salad, eating, and working on the project, I thought I would take the 3 items to the basement and bring up some of the lights. One of the items is a pottery frog, so I meant to put it on a shelf in the far room of the basement with other pottery items. As I walked through the rooms, and turned on lights, I saw that a box of framed paintings had slid off the box they were sitting on. Luckily there was no damage. But as I was looking at the pictures with a flashlight, because the crash had blocked my access to the light, I saw there was a box of kitchen items that had been under the paintings. I knew I had another box of utensils somewhere! I had told my other daughter last week I'd look for some vintage utensils for her. I was able to move the box of painting to one side and move the box of utensils. And saw a tub I had kind of been looking for. So I moved that to the lighted area. I had set the frog on a table, so I got that while I was in the lit room and made my way to the room with the shelf. I took a quick peek in the tub, but it wasn't the one I wanted. While I was looking in the tub, I remembered I moved a box of lights the other day and grabbed it. And got it back upstairs. I am worn out. It is unbelievable to me that after all that work, the dining room is still cluttered, right now, worse than when I started.

(8,445 posts)I've been permanently decluttering over the last year and a half. I'm a minimalist at heart so it feels pretty good, and it sure makes it easy to keep things clean and orderly. Good luck.

(115,841 posts)I have learned that every project breeds more projects, and the process of decluttering actually creates more clutter; it's just in a different location.
