In lowcountry SC, 50s-70s we said grammar school.
Only Time I heard grade school was in a book.
I dont know what the deal is now. I dont generally get into conversations about school, so I dont know.
I think grade school was at one time a Northernism.
But now, at least in SC, there are so many who relocated from other states, people might be saying grade school everywhere.
I think in these times of constant Internet, TV, social media, regional expressions tend to die out. But then again, maybe it takes a generation or two.

(17,216 posts)"Jr High" and "Middle School" are also good indicators of one's generation.
The school district where I finished my public education now has 4 levels of 3 grades each. Yet the school district where I started had only an elementary school of grades 1-6, and shoved all the kids of grades 7-12 in the high school.
