Grade school, grammar school. I think it is/was a regional thing.

In lowcountry SC, ‘50s-‘70s we said “grammar school. “
Only Time I heard “grade school” was in a book.

I don’t know what the deal is now. I don’t generally get into conversations about school, so I don’t know.

I think “grade school” was at one time a Northernism.
But now, at least in SC, there are so many who relocated from other states, people might be saying “grade school” everywhere.

I think in these times of constant Internet, TV, social media, regional expressions tend to die out. But then again, maybe it takes a generation or two.

First time I've ever heard that. Here in New Hampshire, it was always grammar school.

"Jr High" and "Middle School" are also good indicators of one's generation.

The school district where I finished my public education now has 4 levels of 3 grades each. Yet the school district where I started had only an elementary school of grades 1-6, and shoved all the kids of grades 7-12 in the high school.
