I have to admit, my credit union calling me periodically about possible fraud has annoyed me. Mea culpa.
Today I learned that my CU Visa had been used fraudulently for a purchase in France at some home decorating store. I didn't care to learn all the details. I just knew instantly it was fraud.
It's a hassle to have my card cancelled and one reissued, but I'm glad they are doing it. I have a theory how the crooks got my number and expiration date, but no proof.
I hope you've been spared from fraud, but if not, my sympathies.

(16,484 posts)A few years ago. Amazingly, my bank knew it before I did and caught it. There was over $2K worth of charges and I didn't have to pay a thing. I'm thankful for whatever algorithms the banks use to flag purchases.

(119,122 posts)I was checking my on-line statement and noticed several retail purchases in Denver in the previous few days. I was not in Denver on those dates; in fact, I've never been in Denver. So I contacted my CU and explained what happened, and they promptly reimbursed me. They also told me that thieves don't need your card because they can make fake cards using your number (this happened before I had a card with a chip, which are much harder to counterfeit). They just use sequential numbers and make up expiration dates. When people use credit or debit cards at a store, nobody checks the expiration date so they can keep making retail purchases until the real owner cancels the card. I got a new card with a new number and a chip, no more problems.

(21,967 posts)I got a call from the bank who wanted to verify a $151 charge Uber in Colorado. Not me - I am in NYC.
The card was cancelled and I had to order a new one.
I then went through my statement to make sure no other fraudulent charges were made to either that account or other accounts I have with a different bank.
The others were okay.

(16,903 posts)My money people told me they take 10 days to investigate fraud. If its legit, they will replenish my account. I should know by next week.
First time ever, for me. And I had never used that card!

(28,901 posts)This happened to about 3 cards...Over a period of about 5-7 years, we had to cancel our cards three times due to tires in Canada.
I have no idea how this happened...Hubby and I had joint cards in the past and he also uses a debit card. I do not have a debit card.
I have not had a problem with my most recent card. Hubby and I now have different numbers. I also have not had problems since my card has a chip.

(8,203 posts)never had a problem..$1000 purchase by unknown entity in NJ..they asked if I had my cc..of course, it was in my wallet..they immediately cancelled card..put charge under investigation..next billing cycle, charge was removed..
It did make me uneasy because I only had a recurring charge for google utube..so I changed the utube charge to another cc..the only thing I can think of, was an error in billing - by some other entity...or a data breach at CC co. and they are not saying...no proof..just speculation..

(104,843 posts)on Thanksgiving two years ago. I got a call from my credit union ON THANKSGIVING and am forever grateful for their vigilance! This was not in Denver, but a smaller front range CO city, so it can happen anywhere. Even if the location is manned 24 hrs and each pump scanned daily for implanted card chip-readers, it can/does happen. I now pay cash for all gas which is majorly inconvenient, but...
Obviously, there are other ways to have your cards stolen, but the security head at corporate Target told me that ATMs and readers--even inside stores where people let down their guard are commonly affected unless they are being very vigilant. And, I was advised never to self check out using a credit/debit card inside a store UNLESS a staff member is assigned to remain watching every minute the store is open.
sigh...

(9,488 posts)She was on disability at the time and thinks it was stolen by an employee at the carrier. You can go to Kohls, tell them you dont have your card, give your SSN and if that # has an account, shop away! Was a total PITA to close all her accounts and start over.
