Just a little over a year ago Microsoft announced they were ending support for WIN 7. I've been using WIN 7 for many years and I like it. But a funny thing happened. Every month during
2020 I continued to get updates on my WIN 7 machine. "Wassup?", I thought. And eventually
after seeing some negative aspects of operation, in September of 2020 I finally upgraded to
a WIN 10 unit and relegated my WIN 7 unit to my bedroom computer graveyard where I can
only connect via WIFI.
I've tried to build up enthusiasm for WIN 10 but I just can't like it. A couple of days ago I
decided to fire up my WIN 7 unit just to see what was going on and because I haven't
migrated any of the information I have installed on it into my new unit. It had been at least 2
months since I'd turned on the WIN 7 machine and it took awhile to get things running since
at first it did connect using WIFI but then forgot everything I'd taught it and told me I had no
LAN connection. I finally got that straightened out then had to go through installing Microsoft,
Firefox and Malwarebytes updates. But I got that done too, and noticed that all the updates
were the latest and greatest. "Wassup?" I thought.
Anyway, I did retrieve some info from the WIN 7 unit and transferred it via an email message
so it's now accessible to my new machine. Then I sent some family photos from the WIN 7
unit to my granddaughter via email and now I can put those on my new machine. By the time
I was done my WIN 7 unit was running just fine. I miss it and am glad I kept it as a back-up.
As I always say, technical advances are not always a sign of progress! And the amazing thing
to me about this computer/internet thing is that it works at all!

(3,972 posts)I was working on computers when Win10 came out and installed it on countless machines.
Decided then I didn't want it. Microsoft will always have it's hooks in the operating system
and can change terms as they want.
The Linux version I am using is Mint. Was the easiest install I ever did, less than an hour to
install and update.

(3,212 posts)I use it every day. I bought it in 2015 for the purpose of avoiding Win10, which MS was forcing on people back then. I consider it my base. Ha.
I do have two WIN10 laptops and they're Oh-k. One is i7, has a 512 SDD and it's pretty fast. I was planning to use it for special animation, but it's hard to find time.
Other than being a little slower, largely because I have so many programs and data on it, I love my Win7 the best.
I hate Win10's ability to update whenever MS wants it to. And the spyware thing bothers me. Also, the way they changed how they make you log in. They forced me to create a MS email with the newer one. I like having a local account to log on. Not a MS email account.
They want to control too much.
