Hourly fox gave me something I needed during the dark Trump time and still does during covid.
Here is to the fox. Cheers!

(9,654 posts)People swear there are foxes in the area where I live. But I've never seen one. I keep hoping though.
Coyotes, Bobcats, raccoons, skunks, possums, you name it, everything else. But where is the fox?

(28,127 posts)We have gray fox visiting us almost every night - they're smaller, kitty-sized with bushy long tails. And they can climb trees like cats. And they're also friendly, too friendly for their own good.

(14,529 posts)I wish I had a gray fox in my backyard... . Though certainly nothing Fox Newsy .

(28,127 posts)I'm trying to decide on a trail cam to order now, one I can easily put on my porch to capture & download pics from. I must show folks "my buddies."

(14,529 posts)They are shy creatures. Raccoons on the other hand have ambushed me often...love them too but they do have sharp claws and fangs .
Duppers
(28,127 posts)But they're not too agressive here, perhaps because of our big black dog (inherited when my mother died).
These little gray foxes are known to be friendly, unlike their larger red cousins. I can vouch for that - I'd relate the story if I weren't so tired now. It's about a momma fox coming to see me every night; she once brought her 3 kits along. A damn neighbor killed her.

(14,529 posts)The info is mixed on the conservation status of foxes. Thankfully hunting with dogs is banned but unfortunately hunting per se is not. They are viewed as a "nuisance species" - bizarre. I thought that was humans :

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/jun/30/stephen-emmott-ten-billion
I am a nuisance human too, but I try to make large cuts where I can - I am vegetarian, child-free, don't drive and use clothes, electronics etc. till they are in tatters/ before replacing them. Which is why I have to wait on replacing my trashy spyware infested Android and trashy spyware infested Windows 10 (thanks Satya Nadella you super creep for bringing the parasitic surveillance capitalist model into MS!) with the Iphone and Mac.
I'm much more of a nuisance human than you...i try not to be a normal american.
I have 1 offspring, a 34yo son. He knows the probable fate of a child born now & so, doesn't want any children & will not date anyone who does.
- not a total vegetarian but I've cut way down. I love my "2nd helping shrimp" casserole.
- drive since I live in a smallish, spread out town w/o public transportation to places I need to go - doctors' offices 30m away, etc.
Most of my clothing is 20+ yrs old. I don't shop. Some "empty" women I know shop for entertainment! Seriously, they do.
Electronics? Hubby still has his flip phone!! But.. I've a 6yr old smart ph. but no landline.
So, while trying, I've a long way to go.

(14,529 posts)I too only try..it is pretty hard. I probably have a worse footprint than you in many ways. Because though I am vegetarian, I am also greedy! And I do use my phone, comp and tv a bunch.
And I have fallen off the veg wagon off and on over the years but it is never for meat. Like you my reasons for being vegetarian are purely ethical and so when I fall off the wagon the shrimp get the worst of it...
But I usually climb back on. I do eat eggs but I ensure they are from backyard hens. I once saw the guy from Compassion Over Killing -Paul something (or was it Gary Yourofsky? I forget)-talk about it and he mentioned how if someone asked him which involved less cruelty- a slice of beef or a factory farmed egg, he would say the beef. Chickens are one of the worst treated life-forms since humane slaughter laws don't cover them and those cages are brutal. Pigs have it pretty bad too. But I am preaching to the choir.
As for driving, I have just been lucky in usually living in places with good public transportation. It cannot be avoided in most parts of America.
I have about 10 years on your son. And my ex and I had the same conversation 12 years ago-we were in agreement. And nothing that has happened since has made me think it was a bad decision.
I am also lucky in significantly preferring books to electronics except when it directly involves my work.

(11,571 posts)Or do you have a relationship with this creature? The picture of the fox sleeping REALLY makes me wonder, but they are all beautiful.
