The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm due for a new bottle of whiskey and St. Patty's Day is coming up
So rather than my usual fifth of Canadian Club, I thought I would buy an Irish Whiskey.
Hey my stimulus is coming soon, so I can afford it, right?
I've had Jameson's and Bushmill's.
Are there any others you can vouch for as worthy of my stimulus money?
And if anyone is concerned about it, I had one Irish Great Grandparent, Miriam Kelly.
So I have a wee bit o' Irish in me.
Let me know what you think !

(15,137 posts)Not Irish whiskey. But it is lovely. I like the Speysides too. Highland Park is delicious - from Orkney.
Hmmm. Not 5 o'clock yet.

(8,338 posts)Little more expensive than Jameson. Red Brest is very nice but in the 50/60 dollar range where the Dew is in the 40 dollar range and Jamesons in the 30s

(16,869 posts)It's not a whiskey to finish off a bottle after a few days.
Docreed2003
(16,869 posts)I would highly suggest it if your budget allows.
As for Jameson, it's a blended whiskey and isn't terrible but if you're going to do Jameson I'd suggest one of the reserve batches.
There are several others I could suggest based on how much you'd want to spend.

(13,923 posts)A local "faux Irish pub" had a bottle and I tried a shot... MAN THAT WAS GOOD!! $12 but worth it to try it.

It tasted like a very very smooth Jameson with a hint of sweetness. Beautiful finish too..
I want to try the others from Jameson also. Black barrel, Caskmate all look interesting. Never tried Tullamore dew but have heard good things about it..

(808 posts)It's my go to Irish whisky, it is pretty good without being exorbitant in price.

(8,338 posts)Tullamore Dew and Jamesons are both 26 dollars, I would go with the Dew.

You're welcome! 😁
ETA: Tully is excellent for the price point. The rum barrel aged is a departure from your usual choices and worth exploring.

(1,733 posts)I dont drink the stuff (yuk!), and it isnt Irish, but it would be interesting to know how it compares. Theres a Whiskey tab on his website (http://www.bobdylan.com/), or you can go straight to the product website.
Foolacious
(497 posts)It's a Canadian whisky made for the Mexican market. Very economical and surprisingly smooth and rich. I really don't know if it's available up north but if it is it's well worth the very few dollars.

(630 posts)Connemara, or yellow spot. If you're going to splurge, those would be my top 4. If it doesn't have to be irish, oban 14 year, dalwhinnie 15, highland Park viking honour would also make my list.

(14,923 posts)when I found out that Bourbon was close to whiskey, but has to have 51%+ corn mash. That edge over into some sweetness makes the difference for me. I can't drink to get buzzed any more but I love a little Kahlua, champagne, white,
rosé wines, and a bit of bourbon.

(36,827 posts)There are just more rules on what constitutes a whiskey that can call itself bourbon, and being made from mostly corn is one
electric_blue68
(14,923 posts)I just found that out recently. I was very surprised because I don't like whiskey!
So I looked it up, bland found out about the corn mash percentage. I figure the corn's sweetness is why I like it. 👍
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Regardless of what ingredients make up the mash starches have to be broken down to component sugars from which the yeast feeds from to make alcohol. You can even make whiskey by fermenting yeast with processed sugar and many moonshiners do just that. Regardless of the mash, most of the residual sugar isn't going to make it through the distillation process.
Besides being made from mostly corn, bourbon also has to be aged in charred virgin oak barrels. The biggest reason why bourbon tastes sweeter than some other spirits is because the charring of the barrels caramelizes the sugars in the oak and those flavors are going to be imparted into the bourbon during the ageing process. Many bourbons have strong butterscotch notes and these types of flavors come from the barrels.
