(11,686 posts)Older people like me as a kid lived on, and still love, this stuff. Unfortunately, I found from my Mother and older Sister why I shouldn't partake of real licorice any longer.
The problem with real licorice is consumption of licorice can lead to dangerously high blood pressure and dangerously low potassium levels (hypokalemia). Licorice contains glycyrrhizinic acid, which sets off a well-understood chain reaction of biochemical events in the body resulting in high blood pressure.
And kids today do not like the word "moist," hard candies, jello, Nesquik, and more along with black licorice. Best bet is to go on-line an get "licorice flavored" or de-glycyrrhizinated black licorice.
I miss it!

(6,261 posts)There's a decent variety of Dutch and German liquorice as well as Australian.
Most liquorice sold in the US doesn't have any actual liquorice in it, though, so beware. It appears to be some sort of plastic and rubber industrial waste byproduct with added sugar.

(10,738 posts)this is a valid question. Black licorice is nowhere to be found where I live. There is a very expensive British black licorice my store sells, but it's not the same.

(34,120 posts)and still like it but have actually come to really love Red licorice. Twizzlers? NOT LICORCE! Twizzlers are something entirely different. Every now and again I can find some real licorice at Tractor Supply Company up by the check out.
