(11,500 posts)so I had to look!! My last house I lived at for 19 years and had been in the creek that ran behind it many times bringing rocks up to edge with.
The last year I lived there I saw a Northern Water snake and it was huge finally it perched in the next door neighbors yard and a wildlife guy came to get...
Spilling tons of babies out in the driveway as it was lifted into a sack in the back of his truck!
I hate snakes so I had to look.
It was hard to see.

(35,364 posts)Swamp Adventure at least that big. The article said they can get 8 feet long and 10 pounds. The one they had I would guess was about 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. That snake would give you one hell of a bite even if he wasn't venomous. As long as they stay out of my yard I have no problem with them. I haven't seen a snake around my house in 25 years I would like to have a black rat snake to kill the damn moles. I would much rather have the snake than the moles.

(23,155 posts)It's a way of life if you are in any wild area here. If you are in the woods (rattlesnakes) or near a river/stream (cottonmouths) and not paying attention, there can be a price to pay. Wood piles also need close scrutiny because cottonmouths will hide in them too. Cottonmouths are the greater danger because they will come up and sleep in a wood pile right by the house, rattlesnakes usually don't come into yards around my area. The ground where I live is elevated and dry, so even though we are right across the street from the river, we don't get cottonmouths or rattlesnakes here and have never even seen a coral snake in the 41 years I've lived in FL. I believe they are out there, or used to be at any rate, but they seem to have really declined in population since i was a kid.
Wish we had more black or kind snakes, the kind that kill rats/mice. There are some here, but we usually only see the small ones.
