(8,445 posts)But they're pretty sneaky. I guess they could be doing all sorts of crazy stuff when I'm not looking.
I'm always amused when someone says, "My cat never gets on the counters." Yes, s/he does. They all do. They just do it when you're not looking.

(12,480 posts)Is allowed on the counters. He's gonna get up there anyway.
However if I ask him to get down while I am cooking he will.
I warn him if the stove is hot and he won't walk on it.
I don't yell at my cat over bullshit. He takes me seriously when I say no because he knows he could get hurt and I don't lie to him.
He's a very good boi and very polite.
I'm not bullshitting he really is a terrific cat.

(8,445 posts)The only time I get upset with any of my cats is when they bring in prey. I still don't yell, but I do say some choice words.

(236 posts)Sonny Bob get up on the counter whenever he wants to also. Ollie never wants to. Im pretty overindulgent with them. I think because Im aged more like a foster grandparent than parent now, and because I always think of them as the orphaned little nubbins from the shelter that they were. When I have to use a stern voice, like when Sonny is trying to push his face into his elder step sisters bowl of special food, he *usually* listens to me.

(21,657 posts)she no longer tries to grab every piece of food in sight or plunge her face in mixing bowls while I'm cooking. She has learned that some of the stuff does not appeal to her and that if it does, I will give her a taste, but only if she gets down.
She asserts her dignity and right to respect in the way she responds to me. If I give an order in a commanding tone, she gives me a look that clearly says, "You and whose army?" But if I speak in a gentler tone, more like a request, she cooperates.

(42,635 posts)but one day I got on a chair to look in the little cabinet above the refrigerator and there were paw prints in the dust on top of the refrigerator. Sneaky devil.

(236 posts)Thats pretty cool, and amazing to me, even for a cat. My two seem to be pretty cautious kitty boys, not doing anything like that.

(82 posts)Straddle the top of the door, and settle in. She loved heights.

(50,567 posts)I had a cat that liked to sleep on top of doors...but she could make it to the top of the door from floor level. And this was a massive cat - 18 pounds.

(65,490 posts)because in nature they are both predator and prey.
Since the door top is one of the highest positions in the house, it will draw cats. Some will resist, either because it's hard to access or too uncomfortable, but some won't be able to resist that instinct.

(47,518 posts)Funny, dogs would have no desire at all to be in such a precarious spot.
And one that is so uncomfortable.
Of course I have a little lap dog who only wants to be spoiled and pampered.
Thanks for the explanation!

(115,899 posts)That one is obviously an air cat. I used to have one of those who would perch on a door like that, and another who liked the top of the refrigerator. My current cat is a floor cat, which is nice because she doesn't get on the counters.
