(28,945 posts)"Operator? I'd like to make a collect call."
Mom was an operator for Ma Bell and had many stories to tell. Put through a long distance person-to-person call from Ron. When the woman on the other end of the line picked up, she announced that she had a call from Ron. "Ron? Ron? I'm sorry Operator, I don't know a Ron." Just a moment. Is this 123-4567? "Yes, that's my number, but I'm sure I don't know a Ron. You must have made a mistake, Operator. You must have dialed the wrong number!" Just then, the caller chipped in, "It's me, Mother."
Oh, that Ron!

(34,137 posts)I used Mom's antique typewriter that looked like this:
To type and get an image the carbon paper, you really had to pound on it. If you typed too fast, the typebars would get tangled up. If I made a mistake, I just XXXXed it out, no whiteout. For some of my teachers who didn't accept any mistakes at all, I'd have to re-type papers multiple times.
That typewriter inspired my hatred of typewriters. As soon as I got my first computer and printer with a word processing program, the typewriter I owned was donated to somebody else. I've never looked back.
