(21,491 posts)I've always wondered what it's about. Is it a mock fight? A friendly high five?

(21,491 posts)mistake their image in a mirror for another cat and arch their backs, even swat at the image. But once they realized that there wasn't another cat in the room, they lost interest in the mirror completely. (No foreign scent, for one thing.)
My previous cat stared at himself until he realized it was not anotther cat. Then he refused to look into a mirror, even when held in front of it. It was like, " Hah! you can't fool me. That's a mirage."
When my current cat was a kitten, she got glimpses of herself in my bedroom mirror when she was in the living room and the bedroom door was open. She used to sit or even stand upright on her hind legs for a better look for several minutes. But when the other cat made no move toward her, she lost interest.
I guess it's hard to fool a cat once the mirror cat does not behave as expected. And they have no self awareness to recognize that they are looking at themselves.
