(6,799 posts)He was frightened of leashes, we had to pick him up and put him in the car, he would not walk through the front door if someone was standing there. We had to go into another room before he would enter the house. It took awhile before we convinced him it was okay to come in the house with a human holding the door. All of the problems shown in the video were problems we had with Alex. He is fine now and lives with Scout, a mixed breed, and three cats, and a bird.

(22,099 posts)We have 3 that were rescues. It took a long time for the second guy to trust us, and he'll still have the occasional flashback. He was an owner surrender to the Humane Society, and they called us. He wouldn't stay in the people's 4 ft fence. Duh. So they tied him. They did this with one of those big spike collars turned inward. When we got him, he had big scars on his neck, some still not healed yet. He was so matted up, he had to be completely shaved down.
It took him awhile to realize we weren't going to hurt him. We had to increase the height of all our fencing to 6 ft. He would either jump clean over, or scramble up it, when we let him out. Scared me to death. I spent some nights combing the woods with a flashlight.
Four years later, and he's such a love. Lost all interest in escape.
Our other 2, one's owner had died, and the last one, the people were moving to Florida and didn't want to take her.
Yes--its worth it!
