My dog went deaf when he got old, and he picked up very quickly on hand signals.

He was totally tuned in to me, even when we lost voice communication.

One of our now-departed cats lost her hearing as she got older. She had always been rather easily startled, and she was actually happier once she was deaf. I was glad for her that she was no longer anxious.
