(23,155 posts)It's how we converted the 45's to play on phonographs - at least I think it was the 45's that we would insert this into and not the 78's. That was when I was a little kid. Mom and dad got us a collection of Alice In Wonderland songs for the phonograph, I think we were 8 and 6.

(9,197 posts)Promotional copy. Not for resale. One of the (maybe the only) perks of being a music director at a radio station back in the day. There sure wasnt any extra money involved.
I bought a new turntable a couple years ago. It came with a machined aluminum 45 adapter, so I dont need the yellow thingy. Not that I have any 45s.
I also have about 100 cassettes, and the same number of CDs. I even have a few reel-to-reels. Im not a big fan of MP3s.
And get offa my lawn, ya little bastids!

(33,643 posts)I gotta admit, other than the TINY bit of stuff I own that's not on Spotify, I really don't have much use for them other than playing CD's in the car (which is too old for Bluetooth on the sound system).
I have a very good home sound system and believe me it's very sensitive to the sound of the source, and I've VERY picky about sound quality myself. Spotify Premium (which I've heard is 320Mb/s mp3 quality) actually sounds quite excellent, VERY close to as good as flac and other lossless formats. I should add it's notably better-sounding than regular-level Prime Music from Amazon.
And to compare, I have a good record player and cartridge/stylus, and I'm sorry but records just do not sound better to me, I've A/B'd them many times with the same songs.
They're also a lot more hassle to deal with. I listen to music up to 16 hours a day sometimes, and dealing with records or even CD's as many times as is necessary is just not worth it.
Also I can tell Spotify to play some album in the AM, and then all day long it will play stuff 'like' the first record I played, for like 16-20 hours without my having to do anything. TONS of times it'll play some artist or song I've totally forgotten about and it'll put a smile on my face.
That's on top of being able to make playlists from millions of songs, or to type in ANY artist into the search box and have their entire catalog cued up in seconds.
Also, everything is always the latest versions of everything. Like the Zeppelin catalog isn't the shitty sounding CD's from the 80's, they're the 'Remastered by Jimmy Page' versions from the 2010's. Those sound WAY better on Spotify than the old CD's, I guarantee it. I've compared.
All told it's the most freaking brilliant $9.99/month I spend.

(33,643 posts)Who's music I'd never go out and buy, and hence they'd make nothing.
Fact is, for all but the most successful artists, the large majority of their income comes from touring and selling merchandise, and it's been like since well before streaming.

(3,268 posts)some of us had 4 track players ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo-Pak ), my brother had one stolen from his '67 Mustang just weeks before the 8 tracks-which we also had, hit the scene...

(50,562 posts)I have two Sony CD carousels...a 200-disc and a 300-disc, and if I would have bought a 400-disc in the first place like I should have - the pawn shop I bought the 200-disc player from had two 400-disc units - I wouldn't have two players.
The slick thing about the 300-disc is it'll control the 200-disc. If you go this way, be advised: Sony says to use a "mono" cable with 3.5mm plugs as your control link cable. You can't get those very easily, so a "stereo" cable works fine.
