The DU Lounge

I watch his videos all the time on youtube. For the most part they are smaller venues and I can't even imagine seeing him that way.

(7,715 posts)1984 was Prince's year of Purple Rain (the album) and numerous singles.
1985 was the year of Around the World in a Day and "Raspberry Beret".
Two contiguous, but very different, years for Prince.

(8,332 posts)It was freezing cold in Dallas. There was an ice storm, we wanted tickets for the 30th but could only get tickets for the 31st.

(7,715 posts)I just remember both of these years well.
I was overseas in fairly remote areas for much of the summer of 1984 and only heard about Prince through telegrams and airposts (if anyone still remembers these). Purple Rain was a majestic album and spawned so many top 10s and number 1 singles.
I was in the US for the summer of 1985 and remember the release of "Raspberry Beret" vividly. It was a great song, but it, along with its parent album, didn't do anywhere near as well as the previous album.
Who the hell cares!?: you were lucky enough to see Prince live. I never did get that chance. I do envy you!

(7,715 posts)But the poster said New Year's Eve. New Year's Eve 1984 was a very different time for Prince and the Revolution than New Year's Eve 1985.
Besides the two different albums, I'm not even sure Prince was on tour on December 31, 1985.

Two phenomenal entertainers.
I saw Queen in Los Angeles, I was 17 years old and was in the nose bleeds.

(32,002 posts)Ive watched the Live Aid concert video. He was something else. He touched the entire crowd (even if you were sitting in the nosebleeds). What outfit did he wear when you saw them or dont you remember?

I would love to see The Purple Ones ghost, in assless pants, tormenting him and his fleeced flock.

(33,643 posts)They were both great.
One thing though is he tended to focus heavily on newer material in his concerts so you kinda had to be 'up' on what he was doing lately to really enjoy it, and not just be going to hear a hit-parade of 1999/Purple Rain songs.
Fortunately I was into his newer stuff ... plus there was alot of Sign o The Times songs on the Lovesexy tour which was awesome cause I LOVED that album.
He also changes songs up often in his shows ... so again, you needed to know what you're in for when you'd go.
But he was a friggin stud, one of the most charismatic frontmen ever, up there with Mercury, Jagger & Plant.
Oh ... and Bono and Michael Hutchence ...
