Why not just set aside the mangled and restrictive language and just try to engage with the other person, one human being to another. YOu'd be surprised. Sometimes connection happens in the most unexpected places.

Yes, he was stupid. As for me, I'm slightly less bothered by the whole pronoun thing. When HR asked me for my preferred pronouns I gave "he, him, Dude". Have a little humor.
