I thought the diet cola was giving me kidney stones. It was the bran flakes. Thank god for the internet.

(14,858 posts)Sorry about your kidney stones! I've known some people with chronic kidney stone issues. Witnessing their regular pained expressions was sad and worrisome.

(118,824 posts)one or the other of my kidneys. So i stopped the diet coke and the pain, that happened maybe 5 or 10 times in a day, did not immediately stop. Then it did after a bit. I resumed drinking diet coke and the pain did not immediately start. Last night i had some raisin bran and boom today the pain is back. When i think back the pain was associated with two other boxes of raisin bran I ate in April and May. Then i stopped raisin bran around the time the pain stopped. The timing fits like a glove. I obviously am susceptible to kidney stones. I will avoid oxalate now that i know it is bad for me. At one point i was ready to blame garlic in my tomato feta bake. Thanks for your input. I feel relieved.

(17,019 posts)It is important to eat and drink calcium and oxalate-rich foods together during a meal. In doing so, oxalate and calcium are more likely to bind to one another in the stomach and intestines before the kidneys begin processing, making it less likely that kidney stones will form.

(8,606 posts)I'm prone to oxylate/calcium kidney stones, and my urologist told me that. It helps wash them through your system before they can bind to the calcium in your kidneys. Switch to 7up or Sprite for your soft drinks. Any dark cola is full of oxylates, and tea, too. Plus most deeply colored foods like broccoli and spinach. You should be able to find a list on the interwebz somewhere. I have one on my fridge as a depressing reminder, lol.
The area I live in is a urologists paradise; we have some of the highest incidences of kidney stones in the nation. I think it's the mineral rich water, myself.

(14,858 posts)One of my female coworkers had to periodically get shock wave treatments to break up and dislodge her kidney stones. She said that old ultrasound images of her kidneys were like "crystal caverns" without it. Very cautious about her diet too, of course.

(36,941 posts)A cement block studded with nails ripping its way down through your guts. Yeah, I've had more than a few. First one was on a Navy ship off Camp Lejeune. Great pain and a ride to shore in an AAV which is a swimming bulldozer. Not one of your better rides when you're in pain.
